In an August statement carried by The Shopsteward, SATAWU warned of industrial action after road-freight wage talks deadlocked. The union described unresolved negotiations for implementation in 2027, 2028 and 2029, and further procedural steps before action. Its account was a negotiating party’s statement, not independent evidence that the entire national trucking network had stopped.
The NBCRFLI explains that bargaining brings employer bodies and unions together ahead of the current agreement’s February 2027 expiry. Negotiation, deadlock, a notice of intended action and an actual stoppage are different developments. An old headline cannot establish which stage a particular employer or route has reached today.

The August warning is documented. We have not established a current national strike start date or verified which carriers are affected as of publication. This retrospective must not be treated as a live shutdown alert or a legal opinion on whether any proposed action is protected.
Our editorial view is that precise updates are more useful than dramatic ones. A customer needs to know whether their collection can proceed, what evidence supports that answer and when the position will be checked again.
A practical dispatch check.
- Ask the contracted carrier for a dated service-availability update covering the collection and delivery points.
- Read the original union, employer or bargaining-council communication. Check the issue date, affected employer or sector, and stated action period.
- Distinguish a labour notice from a separate road-closure or safety advisory. One does not prove the other.
- Agree a customer-update contact and a safe contingency plan. Do not send a driver to test an unverified obstruction.
